IOW2020-1-47 An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy button (c. 1700-c. 1800).

The attachment loop at the back is missing but a stub remains.

The front has a raised representation of a bearded male figure facing.

This button is white metal coated at the front. 

The button was made in London but the maker’s name is unclear:

Diameter: 26.0mm; thickness: 2.9mm. Weight: 5.60g.

The design, a Capuchin friar couped, is the crest (component of coat of arms) of the Barrington family whose seat was in Essex and were associated with Swainston Manor in the Isle of Wight.
