A complete gilded silver dress hook of sixteenth century AD dating (AD 1500 to AD 1600).
The dress hook has a single sharp pointed hook attached to the reverse of the plate. The hook has an 180 degree bend at the half way point. The plate is rectangular with circular knops on each corner and two circular knops on each side in between. There is a row of raised pellets around the edge of the plate, surrounding a central raised rectangular area with a probable enameled area in the centre. The attachment loop is an integal rectangular loop
It measures 22.8 mm in length, 13.7 mm wide and 8.9 mm thick. It weighs 3.2 g.
The dress hook appeared to be predominately silver in nature, with traces of gilding in recesses and in the centre.
A parallel to this dress hook has been found in Read, 2008, p 60, no 186, and is considered to be sixteenth century in date. Therefore as this dress hook has a precious metal content in excess of 10% and is older than 300 years, it should be considered to be potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.
