A cast copper-alloy Roman as of Hadrian (AD 117-138), dating to the period c.AD 122 (Reece period 6). Probably PONT MAX TR POT COS III, S C, PIE AVG (across field) reverse type depicting Pietas standing left raising both hands with an altar to the left. Copying mint of Rome. Cf. RIC Vol. II, p. 413, no. 579a. This coin is probably a 'Coin of British Association' from a 'Casting Mint' in Britain, identified by D. R. Walker in his report on the coins excavated from the Sacred Spring (see pp. 291-2 and pl. XXXII, nos. 33-34). Walker surmises that these coins might have been produced around AD 122 by officials to make up for a shortfall in small change at about the time of Hadrian's visit to Britain.
