A complete but damaged lead-alloy papal bulla of Pope Nicholas III dating to the medieval period. Nicholas III was Pope from 25 November 1277 to his death on 22 August 1280.
The obverse of the bulla is stamped with the faces of the saints Peter and Paul within a border of raised pellets. Above the heads within the border, the saints' abbreviations would be visible with 'SPA' for St. Paul to the left and 'SPE' for St. Peter to the right (SPA = Sanctus Paulus, SPE = Sanctus Petrus).
The reverse is stamped with NICO/LAVS:/.PP :III. There is an omega above the 'PP', which is an abbreviation of pastor pastorum - meaning shepherd of the shepherds.
