Almost-complete late Iron Age or early Roman copper-alloy Nauheim derivative brooch, with half of the spring, the pin and part of the catchplate missing. The bow is a maximum of 3.5mm wide and is biconvex in cross-section, the reverse being flatter than the front. It is undecorated, and tapers towards a pointed foot with the unperforated catchplate on the reverse. A stub of the return of the catchplate survives, and shows that it turned to the left (when viewed from the reverse). The very bottom of foot and catchplate is bent upwards and may be incomplete.
At the top of the bow, it tapers sharply into the spring, which turns forward and up into two coils on the right-hand side of the bow (when viewed from the reverse). There is then an internal chord, and the other half of the spring is broken halfway through the first coil. The centre of the spring is blocked with iron corrosion, perhaps from a separate axis bar. Surviving length, as folded, 38mm; original length perhaps c. 40-41mm. Surviving width across spring, 9mm. Weight 3.09g.
Very similar to Mackreth 2011, plate 8, no. 4346, which he classifies as a Nauheim Derivative 3.b3.
