A complete copper alloy Medieval Sewing Ring or open Thimble dating the period AD 1200-1450. The object was cylindrical, and open at both ends with straight sides, but has been squashed to a flatter shape. The thimble consists of a long strip of copper alloy wrapped into a cylindrical shape around the digit; the ends of the strip are not fixed together as a joined seam, but overlap. No solder is present suggesting that the seam may have simply overlapped when used, permitting size adjustment. The bottom rim is wider than the top rim. Neither rim is thickened. There is no decoration around the rims or on the inside. The outside of the thimble is covered with closely packed irregular columns of punched circular indentations.
The thimble is green in colour
The overlapping seam suggests a date of c. 1200-1450 (Read 2018, 9-10; Egan 1998, nos. 814-820).
