A cast copper alloy coin weight of 13.16g for the Portuguese Johannes (Joe) coin (valued at 36 shillings), dating to the late 18th century. Both sides are stamped with incuse lettering of s 36.
Notes:
This was originally part of a set for the guinea, half guinea, quarter guinea and also the Portuguese Moidore and Johannes (Joe) coins, which circulated widely in England during the 18th century. As Biggs (1993), p35 and Withers and Withers (2011) p63.
This particular example was stamped from a blank for use by a local trader, rather than being part of a manufactured set.
