Early medieval copper alloy buckle frame and integral plate, dating to the 11th/ 12th century and missing its pin and rivets.
The outside edge is triangular in shape, rounded, hollow on the reverse and in the shape of an animal's head (possibly a mouse or bat?). The animal has two inverted U-shaped ears beyond its heart-shaped face, all of which extends from the integral plate, which is much thinner at 1.5mm thick (the head is max.4mm thick). The area below the ears (the rounded parts of the heart) is slightly higher with a U-shaped dip between, from which extends a restriction for the pin. Below, where the face slopes downwards, is a ring-and-dot eye on either side. The nose is rounded.
The plate is 6mm wide and one corner has broken (but has been replaced by the finder with a piece of blu-tack). At either end is a 1mm diameter piercing, for rivets. Between is a slightly smaller piercing for the pin. This is above an oval shape, partly created by the U-shape between the ears.
All original patina is missing and the metal is ornagey-brown in colour.
Measures 22x17mm and weighs 5.21g.
