Incomplete cast copper alloy unlooped palstave of the Middle Bronze Age (1500 BC - 1200 BC). Part of a hoard of four implements (Treasure case no. BM2003 T392). Length 152.5mm, maximum width at the lower part of the blade 47mm and maximum thickness just above the stops 20mm. Weight 345.5g.

The palstave was in two parts when found and the horizontal break across the septum, just above the stops, is old and reveals a number of relatively large "gas" bubble cavities. One corner of the butt and the cutting edge are broken and missing. These breaks are also old. Each face is almost identical. The sides of the low flanges taper slightly, from the stops towards the rounded butt. The stops are merely a gentle slope between the flange ends which form a broken shield motif. The sides of the blade flare outwards and downward towards the lost cutting edge. The blade appears to have been symmetrical in plan, prior to the corner of the blade, near the cutting edge, having been damaged. The scant remains of a longitudinal median casting seam is visible on one of the edges. The piece is corroded and has a patchy dark green/brownish patina.

Notes:

The style of this palstave, known as a Werrar type, is peculiar to the Isle of Wight.

A brief description of the development of palstaves and axes of the Bronze Age period is given in Savory, H. N. 1980, pages 43-49.
