A complete late Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy open thimble or sewing ring dating to the period c.AD 1400 - 1600. The thimble is circular in plan, narrowing in width from the open base to open top. The walls of the thimble are covered in hand-drilled, sub-circular indentations arranged into a series of slightly irregular lines. There is an a slightly thickened collar around the base of the thimble. There is no evidence of a makers mark.

It measures 10.0mm in height, 17.8mm in diameter at the top and 20.4mm at the base and weighs 4.81 grams.

Similar examples can be found in Read (2018), e.g. nos 26 and 42. He states that these type of thimbles were possibly from Nuremberg and probably cast. They have punched indentations and can have circumferential ridges or grooves. He suggests a date of c.1520-1600 for this type (2018, 14-15). Ring type thimbles are found in British contexts from around AD 1450 (Holmes 1988:1). This thimble is similar to one found in Holmes 1988 fig. 4 which is dated to c.1450 - 1550.
