HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: SF-0E37DB

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) hooked tag. It consists of a sub-triangular piece of sheet metal. There is significant damage to all three sides and corners, but there appears to have been a circular attachment hole through each upper corner originally, one of which is now incomplete and the other missing along with the rest of the corner. There is a rounded break across the lower end where a hook would have projected originally. The outer face is decorated with four very small circular holes arranged in a lozenge shape, each with an incised ring surrounding it.

This belongs to Read's (2008) early medieval Class A, Type 1 ('triangular/sub-triangular'), which he suggests are predominantly of c.7th to c. early 12th century AD.

Length: 19.05mm, width: 12.59mm, thickness: 1.16mm, weight: 0.84g
