An incomplete decorated early Medieval strap mount, 28.3mm in length, made from copper alloy with a gilded and white metal coated front. The decoration comprises a small central zoomorphic motif with traces of gilding, which measures 12.5mm by 6.6mm and features an S-shaped animal with sinuous intertwined limbs and and rearward facing head which is stylistically attributable to Salin Style 2 or a derivative. This is surrounded by a wide border with a silver or tin coated surface which is decorated with three nested borders of annulets.
At either end of the plate is an abraded stump of a flange which would have had a pair of rivet holes.
Notes:
See also KENT-6165C7 and NLM4176. This is a belt-plate related to buckle plates of Marzinzik's Type II.15a. These belt-plates and buckles are also found on the Continent; they date to the mid sixth century (Marzinzik 2003, 43-44). The presence of Style II on this mount however would indicate a slightly later date range of mid 6th to mid 7th century AD.
