An asymmetrical lead object: probably a plug for the repair of a damaged vessel. The plug has a groove where it was fitted to the wall of the broken object. On both faces of the plug there are impressions in the surface of the lead made by woven fabric possibly used to hold the plug in place as it cooled. Such plugs were in use from at least the Roman period until the post-medieval period, and without the presence of any diagnostic elements are impossible to date. There is however a small piece of leather caught within the groove which might suggest the plug's use in a leather vessel, or an alternative use as a belt stud.
