COIN WEIGHT

Unique ID: KENT-A23FA5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A worn cast and struck copper-alloy Medieval coin weight for a French franc d'or 'a cheval', dating to the reigns of Jean II (1350-1364) or Charles V (1364-1380), possibly issued by a Lombardic banking family.

Description: The weight is uniface (design on one side) and round in plan. The upper faces bares the design of a 'king' on horseback riding right with a sword in hand and horse in trappings. In exergue is the mostly obscured legend [__]E.LAD, likely indicating an issuer. The weight is abraded around it circumference and the design is worn. It has a green patination.

Measurements:. 14.87mm in diameter, 2.57mm thick and weight of 2.74g in weight.

Discussion: With the legend appearing to be an abbreviated issuer or maker name it was likely issued by a Lombard banking family (Withers and Withers 1995, 32).

Inscription: [__]E.LAD
