An incomplete lead seal matrix of medieval date, c.AD 1200 - 1300. Approximately one third of the pointed ovate seal remains, the rest having been lost to a worn break.
The front surface bears an indistinct central device and surrounding partial legend. The remains of a worn mid-rib and loop can be seen to the reverse.
The metal has a light brown patina and is worn. The seal matrix is 21.1mm long, 29.1mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 7.1g.
Sealing was used for authenticating documents for around 300 years in medieval Britain. Though initially limited to the higher ranks of the church and state, the use of seals became more general from the 11th century onward and by the end of the thirteenth century tradesmen and peasants also possessed them.
