A Flint Tranchet axehead dating to the Mesolithic or early- Neoltihic c. 9000-4000 BC.

Description: The object is of typical wasted sub-rectangular shape in plan. It has a rounded butt and and blade edge. It has a variable shape in cross-section, D-shaped from the mid to blade end and pointed oval towards the butt end. The axehead has invasive scaled semi-abrupt retouch covering much of the object. The blade edge has a sharpened tranchet flake. The axehead has a mottled dark brown matrix lighting towards the blade and one side. There is also heavy white banding formed from a vein poor quality chert or low silicate flint. This would have led to weakness in the flint as it is a fault although it could be considered aesthetically pleasing and may be the reason for the flints selection, especially considering how common good quality flint i sin the area.

Measurements: 170.1mm long, 66.51mm wide, 51.02mm thick and 490g in weight.
