A silver threepence dating to the reign of Elizabeth I (1558 - 1603).
Obverse:
Crowned left facing bust with rose.
The mint mark is worn, however it is possibly '65b' Acorn (1573-74) (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 171).
The inscription is worn and incomplete however likely would have read: ELIZABETH/DG/ANG/FR/ET/HI/REGINA.
Reverse:
A long cross fourchee over a shield displaying a royal coat of arms.
The date of the coin is incomplete: 15??
The inscription is worn and incomplete, however would have likely read: POSVI/DEV AD/IVTORE/M MEV (I have made God my Helper).
Discussion:
The rose to the right of the bust was used to distinguish the sixpence, threepence, three halfpence and threefarthings from the shilling, groat, half groat and penny (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 171).
