An incomplete copper alloy and iron lipped terret, of Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 200). This terret fragment is the other half of WMID-3BAF15. The join is on the broken side of the lipped projection.
Around 25% of the terret is present, consisting of one of the sides. The base is hollow.
It measures 34.3 mm tall, 26.7 mm wide and 17.6 mm thick. It weighs 18.4 g.
The terret is a mid green to brown colour, with iron staining around the side. Some of the original surface still remains in the inward curve of the arm.
This terret fragment is similar to those recorded on the PAS database as NCL-AD9E11 and WMID-BF6C0E, classified as an Early Roman Massive Donside terret. It is similar to an example from Chesters, Northumberland, illustrated in Jope 2000, 309, 291e and MacGregor 1976, 113. Dating is likely to be from the late 1st to mid 3rd century AD. This style is often referred to as Massive or Donside terret, due to their size and initial identification in the Donside area of north-eastern Scotland.
