A medieval lead alloy seal matrix, probably dating to AD 1200-1350. The matrix is pointed oval or vesica shaped and flat, with a central rib along the reverse with the vestigial remains of a perforated lug at on end. The face of the seal is engraved with a depiction of a lion rampant, within the inscription (in retrograde): RICARD(I GAGGAL).
Length 30.5mm; width 21.2mm; thickness 5.2mm; weight 10.34g.
Crude lead personal seals with simple non-heraldic designs are thought to date to the 13th and early 14th centuries (Harvey & Mcguiness 1996: 79-80).
