Four suspected Roman iron hob nails: three have hemi-spherical heads, the other is larger and missing its head and may be a different type of nail. All four have a square or rectangular bent shank which forms a 'J' in profile and tapers to a blunt point. They measure between 20.3mm and 13.7mm in length.
Notes:
Hobnails were used in Roman footwear, boots and sandals (caligae) which were made from three main pieces of leather: the upper sole, lamina and the insole. All three layers were clenched together with hobnails, which were frequently arranged in patterns.
