Fragment of a pair of post-medieval pipe tongs, an implement employed to pick up burning embers for the ignition of a tobacco pipe. The terminal is in the form of a stylised human hand with a short length of curved stem. Another two examples have been recorded in this parish, one from NHER 49851, the other (NMS-83D1B4, foud in 2008), perhaps part of the same tongs, from the same field as this example. Extant length 32.5mm. Width 8.5mm. 17th century.
