An incomplete iron unidentified object of a Post Medieval or Modern date (c. AD 1600-2050). The object consists of an iron bar, rectangular in section, with an integral loop in the centre through which a single link of iron chain loops through, which has bent out of shape most likely due to post depositional factors. It is likely that there would have been a series of iron chain links and that this bar would have been suspended by this means.
It's unclear exactly what this object is due to the lack of diagnostic features and also presence of heavy corrosion. It may have functioned as a form of industrial balance in which two objects could be hung from either end of the arms to be weighed. Or it may have been used to suspend another object.
The metal has a reddish-brown patina with patches of iron corrosion.
The object is 73.5mm long, 20.2mm wide, 5.4mm thick and weighs 21.6g.
