An fragment of a Roman copper alloy bracelet dating to c.AD 320 to 450.
The bracelet is formed of a strip of copper alloy that is sub-rectangular in cross section. Both ends taper to a rounded point formed from an old break. The bracelet is decorated with sub rectangular protrusions at intervals of 5.8mm. Between each protrusion are 3-4 small incised lines, producing a bead-like pattern. The reverse is undecorated, as this would have faced the arm.
Assuming that the bracelet had a regular diameter, it is possible to estimate a diameter of c.60mm and that c.35% of its circumference survived.. At its thickest, the bracelet is 3.1mm, and its width measures to 1.04 mm. The fragment weighs 0.95 grams.
A bracelet with a similar decoration was excavated in Colchester and it is classified with her "Bead-imitative" group of bracelets. Cf.Crummy 1983, p. 44, no. 11721 dating to c AD 320-450. Other parallels can be found in Swift 2000, p 128 and p.136. The database has other records of similar finds such as WILT-9A4129 and HAMP-053D76
