A Roman ceramic rim sherd from a Severn Valley ware vessel of tankard type dating to c. AD 50-250.

The fabric is soft and a reduced grey colour at its core with a lighter buff orange exterior surface. It has occasional micaceous inclusions and some black stone and red stone inclusions (<c.1.0) occasionally larger. The fabric conforms most closely to that described by Webster (1976, 18).

The rim is rounded and very slightly everted. It is divided from the body by a shallow u-shaped groove running transversely across the sherd after which the profile is very slightly convex. Transverse potting lines on the interior of the sherd suggests the vessel was wheel made. The sherds breaks are still defined but slightly abraded.

The sherd is 37.0mm long, 39.5mm wide, 8.1mm thick and weighs 21.51 grams. It is possible to estimate that the vessel had a diameter or 22.0mm although less than 5% of its circumference survives.

The fabric identifies the base as coming from Severn Valley Ware vessel defined and illustrated by Webster (1976). Its profile is most similar to his type 38 or type 43, termed a tankard (Webster 1976, 30-31). This form is dated from the mid-late first century to the 3rd century AD.
