A roman ceramic body sherd from a New Forest ware vessel of uncertain type dating to c. AD 260-370.

The fabric is a reduced grey colour at its core. It has occasional micaceous inclusions and very rare black and limestone inclusions (<0.8mm). It had been coated on its inner and outer surface with a purplish-black slip that is abraded on both surfaces. The fabric conforms most closely to Fulford's fabric 1a (Fulford, 1975, 24).

The sherd has an irregular profile and too little of it remains to identify the original form of the vessel. Its break are clean but its surface is quite abraded.

The sherd is 30.4mm long, 19.9mm wide, 3.4mm thick and weighs 2.48grams.

The fabric identifies the base as coming from New Forest Ware vessel however numerous form types exist such that it is not possible to be more specific about its form or period of use other than to suggest a range between AD 260 (the date of this fabric's first use) and AD 400 (Fulford 1975, 104).
