AMPULLA

Unique ID: SF-162044

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast lead Medieval ampulla, dating to AD 1300-1500.The ampulla is pouch-shaped with an elongated neck and two semi-circular suspension loop on both sides, at the base of the neck; one of them is slightly damaged. The front face of the bowl depicts the letter R enclosed within a double circle, and with a branch or foliate decoration running up the centre of the neck towards the opening. The back face has a moulded scallop shell motif. The mouth of the ampulla is widened and misshaped.

Cf SF-A336C2, which reports the following comment:

"The presence of scallop shell design on the reverse face of this ampulla signifies pilgrimage itself. The letter R on the obverse is less easily identifiable, however the use of this letter is seen for Richard Caistor of Norwich, Vicar of St. Stephen's, Norwich where a local cult emerged following his death in 1420 (Spencer, 1998: 196). It is possible that this ampulla relates to this, or a similar cult. "
