A cast copper-alloy spectacle buckle. The buckle measures 28.5 mm wide, 26 mm long, 2 mm in thickness and 4.45 g in weight. The strap bar is intact, trapezoidal in section, 1.5 mm in width, but the pin is missing and there some wear on the bar which has also corroded to a thinner width at the centre. The D-shaped loops are plano-convex in section with bevelled inner edges. The strap bar is flush with the level of the frame and there are no terminal knops. The upper surface of the frame has the remains of moulded decoration which has mostly corroded away. Spectacle buckles were in common use between the 14th and late 17th centuries but most commonly in the 16th and 17th centuries when they appear to have been mass produced items. Spectacle buckles with decorative mouldings are generally Post-medieval in date.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar spectacle buckle with foliate mouldings on p.68, no.425, which is dated from 1550-1650.
