An incomplete rear hook colchester derivative style brooch of Roman dating (1st Century AD).
Around 50% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, rear hook, spring, wings and part of the bow. The foot, pin and catch plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
The wings are cylindrical with an open back, so the spring is visible. There are four coils to each side of the pin. The wing caps are circular with a hole to hold the axis bar. A rearward facing hook is present on the head, still containing part of the spring. The front of the wings have been decorated with bead and reel decoration (central groove, with a ridge to either side). The bow appears to be undecorated but the surface has been damaged.
The brooch measures 20.5 mm in length, 19.9 mm wide and 9.7 mm thick. It weighs 4.8 g.
The brooch is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina.
A similar brooch has been illustrated as no 11989 in Hattatt, 2011, vol 2, plate 39. Hattatt has classified it as a Colchester derivative Rearhook 1.i. consistent with 1st Century AD dating.
