This coin was 'won' at a raffle and reported by the winner, the exact findspot is unknown, only a broad location of 'Sleaford' was provided. Of the 219 silver coins of Cnut the Great (1016-1035) recorded on the PAS database, this is the first pierced example and therefore fulfills the criteria for Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. The modification of coins into jewellery was common in the eleventh century, both as brooches/badges and pendants. There are numerous precedents for considering single finds of pierced coins to be considered as objects rather than coins and therefore Treasure, as hoard evidence suggests that they did not re-enter circulation. Other Cnut the Great silver coins recorded by the PAS that were classified as Treasure include the coin hoard from Carlton, Lincolnshire (2014T371, PAS no. PUBLIC-488B0A).
