A cast silver coated and gilt copper-alloy shield tongue with inlaid slab garnets from a buckle of Marzinzik (2003) Type I.3 or II.14, likely forming a complete set with a D- shaped or rectangular buckle. dating to the first half of the 6th century.
Description: The pin has a narrow rectangular shaped shield from which projects the bevelled waisted arched tongue, which curves downward at the terminal to end in a blunt tip. The back has an indent for a missing fastening the tongue to the frame. The pin is complete and has a rectangular cell on the upper surface containing two rectangular plate cut garnets divided by thin gold Cloisonné cell wall. There is some damage around the pin shield box and along the pin shank itself showing that it has a very thick silver layer over copper-alloy core. Much of the gilding has worn off but definitely
Measurements: 23.41mm long, 10.48mm wide, 8.46mm thick and 3.12g in weight.
Discussion: This buckle tongue fits well with buckles classified by Marzinzik's (2003) as types I.3 or II.14, dating to the early sixth-century, which seem fairly restricted to Anglo-Saxon England, particularly the south-east or Britain (Marzinzik 2003, 13-14).
