SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: YORYM-054931

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete lead alloy spindle whorl or weight of Early Medieval date (c. AD 950-1150). The object is circular with a flat top and base and rounded edges. A perforation runs through the centre. On one face there are lighter marks on the surface and one worn thin line or groove that runs from the central perforation to the outer edge. This groove is polished smooth and most likely comes from the use of the object demonstrating where it was tied to another object.

The metal is a mid-grey, light brown colour.

The object is 31.2mm in diameter, 13.1mm thick and weighs 81.8g.

An identical object from the database can be found at YORYM-867FA5. This object comes from the same locale and has been dated to the Early Medieval period on the basis of the presence of abundant other Early Medieval objects coming from the same location. Furthermore, the inner diameter of the object is 9mm, this therefore fits into Walton Rogers Form B which dates from the late 10th to early 12th century. Therefore, this object is likely to be of a similar date.
