Unique ID: LEIC-DA268B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

4 undated, 8 Mesolithic and 13 Neolithic lithic implements.

22 are made on flint and 3 (A4, B5, E3) are made on chert.

Top to bottom, left to right:

A1 Mesolithic flint blade. Made on flint, mid greyish-blue opaque patina. Tertiary piece, probably struck to rejuvenate a core face, Both bidirectional and orthogonal scars are present on the dorsal face. Late Upper Palaeolithic to Early Mesolithic -13000 to -8000. SK7695 2527

A2 Neolithic flint blade. Made on flint, light to mid-grey opaque patina. Tertiary piece, facetted butt, orthogonal flake scars on dorsal. Early Mesolithic to Late Neolithic -9000 to -2200. SK7690 2510

A3 Mesolithic flint blade. Made on flint, light bluish-cream opaque patina. Unidirectional technology from blade core, broken distally by post-depositional forces. Right lateral edge worked at a later date indicating reuse. Large plain butt. Early to Late Mesolithic -9000 to -4000. SK773 2539

A4 Mesolithic chert blade. Made on light greyish-brown opaque chert. Tertiary piece, hard-hammer struck piece from unidirectional blade core.Early to Late Mesolithic -9000 to -4000. SK7698 2543

A5 Neolithic flint blade. Made on flint, light grey opaque patina. Complex pattern of centripetal flake scars on dorsal face. Left lateral edge retouched on the ventral face (short, abrupt). Early to Late Neolithic -4000 to -2200. SK7265 2415

B1 Mesolithic flint flake. Made on flint, light mid-blue opaque patina. Tertiary piece. Unidirectional flake scars although base has orthogonal removal. Left part of distal end retouched (abrupt, short) to form a pointed corner. Late Upper Palaeolithic to Late Mesolithic -13000 to -4000. SK7691 2530

B2 Neolithic flint flake. Made on a flint cobble, dark grey semi-translucent patina. Unidirectional scars on dorsal, secondary piece. Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age -4000 to -1000. SK7710 2594

B3 Neolithic flint end scraper. Made on flint, patinated mid-grey and opaque. Secondary piece. Clunky flake, orthogonal scar pattern, retouched across distal end (short, abrupt). Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age -4000 to -1000. SK7779 2464

B4 Neolithic flint flake. Made on flint, patinated mid-grey and opaque. Secondary piece. Clunky flake, orthogonal scar pattern, notched in a few places with some minor retouch on the distal end (short, abrupt). Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age -4000 to -1000. SK7777 2461

B5 Undated chert flake. Made on chert, light creamy-brown opaque patina. Hard-hammer struck, plain bulb, tertiary piece. SK768 251

C1 Neolithic flint flake. Made on flint, patinated mid-grey and opaque. Secondary piece. Clunky flake, orthogonal scar pattern. Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age -4000 to -1000. SK762 278

C2 Mesolithic flint flake. Made on flint, light bluish-grey semi-translucent patina. Tertiary piece, unidirectional flake scars on dorsal. Plain butt, hard-hammer struck. Late Upper Palaeolithic to Late Mesolithic -13000 to -4000. SK7617 2784

C3 Neolithic flint scraper. Made on a short, wide, flint flake, light grey opaque patina. Secondary piece, left edge retouched to form scraper (low angle, short, scaler). Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age -4000 to -1000. SK7619 2792

C4 Neolithic flint flake. Made on flint, light grey opaque patina. Orthogonal flaking at left lateral edge is old platform. Broken distally with step fracture. Secondary piece. Early to Late Neolithic -4000 to -2200. SK728 246

C5 Neolithic flint flake. Made on flint, light grey translucent patina. Bi-directional flake scars separated by central ridge. Hinge fractures at the end, plain cortical butt. Early to Late Neolithic -4000 to -2200. SK7247 2542

D1 Neolithic flint awl. Made on flint, mid-grey opaque patina. Secondary piece, proximal end retouched to produce awl tip (short, abrupt). Early to Late Neolithic -4000 to -2200. SK7701 2567

D2 Mesolithic flint blade. Made on flint, light brownish-cream opaque patina. Secondary blade. This is the proximal end of a blade struck from a unidirectional core. Distal end is deliberately snapped although potentially not in the correct place as a small microburin notch is present on the right lateral edge just below the snap. Early to Late Mesolithic -9000 to -4000. SK7677 2509

D3 Neolithic flint awl. Made on a flint flake, semi-translucent with light grey opaque patina. Awl on distal end of tertiary flake, retouched slightly on one side (short, abrupt). Early to Late Neolithic -4000 to -2200. SK7265 2415

D4 Neolithic flint arrowhead (possible). Made on a re-used flint flake that is light to mid-blue opaque patina. Oblique breakage occurred in antiquity. This the distal end of a flake. Retouch (short, semi-abrupt, scaler) around the base has removed the patina in the most part, apart from which it is less worked. Early Mesolithic to Late Neolithic -9000 to -2200. SK7617 2784

D5 Undated flint flake. Made on flint, light grey opaque patina. Tertiary piece, plain butt, hard-hammer struck. Broken. SK728 246

E1 Mesolithic flint core fragment. Made on flint, mid-grey to light brown opaque patina. Fragment of the platform of a unidirectional blade core. Early Mesolithic to Late Neolithic -9000 to -2200. SK7704 2567

E2 Neolithic flint fragment. Made on flint, light brown and grey opaque patina. Part of a broken flake. Early to Late Neolithic -4000 to -2200. SK7623 2780

E3 Undated chert fragment. Made on chert, light creamy-grey opaque patina. Tertiary piece. Broken flake with complex dorsal scar pattern. SK728 246

E4 Undated flint fragment. Made on flint, light bluish-grey opaque patina. Tertiary flake fragment. SK7265 2415

E5 Mesolithic flint snapped bladelet. Made on flint, light greyish-cream opaque patina. Tertiary piece, snapped distally. Plain butt, unidirectional scar pattern on dorsal. Early to Late Mesolithic -9000 to -4000. SK7265 2415
