A complete copper alloy bolster from a scale tang knife, of Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1600).
The knife bolster is sub triangular in shape, with a rectangular cross section. The top of the end cap has a rectangular slot cut into it, with slightly diagonal lines.The base has a sub rectangular central hole (9.2 mm by 4.6 mm). No decoration is present on any side. This slot would have secured the tang of the knife.
It measures 16.8 mm in length, 14.0 mm wide and 5.0 mm thick. It weighs 3.6 g.
The bolster is a dark green colour with an even surface patina.
Scale tang knives were introduced in the 13th/14th Centuries, but continued in use until the 17th Century.The bolster sits between the blade and the handle.
