An incomplete copper alloy double looped trapezoidal buckle of Post Medieval dating (AD 1620 -AD 1680).

Around 50% of the buckle is present, consisting of one outer loop. The outer loop is sub rectangular in shape. The surviving outer loop has a trefoil shaped end and a lobed protrusion at either end of the narrowed strap bar.

The buckle measures 22.9 mm in length, 27.9 mm wide and is 2.1 mm thick. It weighs 2.6 g.

The buckle is brown in colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of some of the surface detail.

Whitehead (2003, p84) has illustrated a similar buckle (no.524) with the same engraved decoration. He has dated this type of buckle to the Post Medieval period (c.AD 1620 to c.AD 1680) and suggests they may have been used for buckling spurs. There are also examples recorded on the PAS database, (CORN-B6ACD7) was discovered in Cornwall and (SOM-6ECFC5) from South Somerset. Another was found in a 17th-century context at Pontefract Castle (Roberts 2002, 274, fig. 112, no. 14).
