An incomplete copper-alloy bell of probable Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The bell has a conical triangular shape with a wide base and sides which taper to a pointed apex from which an integral attachment loop projects. The rim of the bell displays a number of small breaks and is worn. A partial circumferential ridge can be determined around the base. The clapper and clapper suspension system no longer remain though traces of iron corrosion are retained to the interior of the bell.
The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The bell is 32.8mm tall, 29.1mm in diameter at the base, the walls are 1.7mm thick and it weighs 14.9g.
Numerous conical bells have been recorded with the PAS including YORYM-E05943, SF-0D8879, SWYOR-FE6F46, BH-F352F7 and YORYM-D0D776. These bells are generally dated to the Roman period.
Three similar examples, two of which are unstratified, are illustrated in Crummy, p.127 and are described as probably being from the collars of cows, sheep, goat, and possibly domestic pets.
