COIN

Unique ID: KENT-60B28C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete early-medieval silver penny of Offa of Mercia (757-96), Light Coinage (c.765-92), mint: Canterbury, moneyer: Ealraed (not included on coin; Chick 94; North 290). Ref: North 1994: 87.

The coin is in generally good condition but the edge (12 - 3 o'clock obverse) is badly chipped.

Measurements: 16.92mm in diameter, 0.86mm thick and 1.03g in weight.

Notes:

This coin does not include the moneyer's name, the reverse simply inscribed with O/F/R/M which related to Offa as king of Mercia. However, die links with this type and those of Ealraed suggest he is the moneyer responsible.

The coin also appears to be a die duplicate for Chick 94a.
