BROOCH

Unique ID: NMGW-4BC96E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Small annular decorative silver brooch. The frame is decorated with beading in the form of enlarged filigree. There is no restriction in the frame for the pin which has a flat plain shaft and wrap around head.

External diameter 215.4 x 15mm; inner diameter 13 x 12.4mm; maximum frame thickness 1.4mm; weight 0.96g. Surviving pin length 11mm; thickness 1.4mm (some of shaft and head missing).

The surviving pin is in three fragments (recent breaks, associated with discovery).

In terms of size and design, the brooch is of thirteenth- to mid-fourteenth-century form.

Notes:

A silver brooch from Ireland is of similar size and design (Deevy 1998, 115, no. RB 99). Similar designs occur on annular brooches made from copper alloy, and traces of similar beading are evident on a small silver brooch from Llanfaes, Anglesey (Redknap 1995, fig. 4, no. 14).
