STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: WILT-B6C7C8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete medieval copper alloy swivel strap fitting dating to c AD 1100-1500. The object comprises a single sub-circular loop with a flattened section at the base. This flattened section expands in the plane perpendicular to the hoop into an open circular loop, with this flanked by zoomorphic mouldings which grasp the loop between their jaws. The apex of the hoop is worn thin through wear.

The strap fitting weighs 6.58g and measures 27.1mm in length (across the shoulders), 23.93mm in width (from the bezel to the thin section), 3.11mm in thickness and 9.68mm in height across the oval bezel.

A similar loop can be seen attached to a silver inlaid decorative strap distributer excavated from a late medieval context at Rattray Castle (Murray & Murray 1993: 191, no. 204), suggested to be part of a dog's lead. By comparison with similarly decorated buckles (such as that from Winchester, Biddle 1990: 513, no. 1110), it it was suggested that it was already old at the time of deposition; described as romanesque by Hinton (2005: 182). cf. similar examples on this database DEV-6E70AB, DEV-BD6BF4, PUBLIC-9CE500 and DUR-6AEB8E. Such swivels probably remained in use throughout the Medieval period.
