A Spanish Post Medieval copper alloy 'resellado' coin, originally of Philip III (1598-1621) or Philip IV (1621-1665), countermarked and revalued to four maravedis in 1655 during the reign of Philip IV (1621-1665). The coin has a counterstamp of IIII on one side and a revaluation date of 1655 on the other.
Notes:
These are often called 'cob' coins after the Spanish word for copper which is 'cobre': they were crudely made in Spain initially and later in the Americas for use in the Spanish colonies. The coinage was re-valued and consequently these are often countermarked. The flans are usually, as on this example, an irregular shape, slightly squared off in places, and in this case split around the edges.
