An incomplete Roman copper-alloy sestertius of Diva Faustina I (AD 138-161), dating to the period c. AD 141-161 (Reece period 7). AVGVSTA, S C reverse type depicting Pietas standing left sacrificing over an altar and holding box of incense. Mint of Rome.

Obverse: [...]VA FAV-[...]; Draped bust right.

Reverse: [AVGV]-STA, S C; Pietas standing left sacrificing over an altar and holding box of incense.

Diameter: 30.2mm. Weight: 15.59g. DA=12:11-12.

Notes:

As the wife of Antoninus Pius, Faustina earned a mixed reputation for her purported fun-loving lifestyle and lack of gravity. The emperor himself wrote very fondly of Faustina, though other reports suggest that her debauchery were a source of grief for her husband. Antoninus Pius may even have suppressed many of the vicious rumors which circulated about his wife.
