A cast lead weight, perforated and of sub-conical form, probably dating from the medieval or post medieval periods, about AD 1200 - 1800. The object has a height of 9.85mm, and basal dimensions of 38.10mm by 33.03mm. It weighs 108.04g. It is a rough dome or sub-conical shape, with a base that is tending towards pentagonal, and five flattened facets on the sides. A perforation runs the height of the weight, only 2.4mm long by 2mm wide at the apex, but 6.5mm by 5.8mm at the base. this may have been to attach a missing suspension loop.
The mass suggests that it could have been intended to be a quarter pound weight in the Mercantile or Avoirdupois systems, especially with added mass from the possible suspension loop (see Egan 1998, page 302). It has a creamy patina, but an uneven shape. There is a spiral groove on the flat base, probably the result of the manufacturing process rather than intended decoration.
