A silver threepence dating to the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603).
Obverse:
Crowned left facing bust with rose.
Indiscernible mint mark due to ware.
The inscription reads: ELIZABETH/DG/ANG/FR/ET/HI/REGINA (Elizabeth by the Grace of God Queen of England, France and Ireland).
Reverse:
A long cross fourchee over a shield displaying a royal coat of arms.
The coin is dated 15??.
The full inscription reads: POSVI/DEV AD/IVTORE/M MEV (I have made God my Helper).
Discussion:
The rose to the left of the bust was used to distinguish the sixpence, threepence, three halfpence and threefarthings from the shilling, groat, half-groat and penny (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 171).
Because the coin is worn particularly on the date and mark it is not possible to discern the exact date or issue of the coin.
