HANDAXE

Unique ID: SF-757570

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete flint handaxe. The axe is essentially sub-cordate in form, but its shape is distorted by an angular projection to one side of the butt end. It has been struck on a thermal fractured flake from a larger nodule. The edges and ridges on both faces are fairly abraded or 'rolled'. A small amount of cortex remains on the ventral face and slightly more in patches on the dorsal face. There is differential patination on each face with a mottled light brown, orange stained patina covering the dorsal face, but only extending across c.40 % of the ventral face leaving the dark brown colour of the original flint visible across the remainder. Semi-hard hammer invasive retouch covers the majority of both faces, but the natural shape of the flake has been retained in places. The angular projection at the butt end has seen very little re-working and a large, natural thermal facture remains visible on its ventral face. The distal end has a rounded point with a hinged fracture to its left side on the dorsal face and an attempted tranchet flake removal to its right side on dorsal face.

With thanks to Jason Gibbons for his identification help.
