An incomplete copper-alloy dress or hair pin of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 800 - AD 1000.
The head of the pin is globular with no decoration evident. The top of the head is slightly flattened and circumferential collar is present below the head. A circular-sectioned shaft extends from the collar, terminating in a worn break.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The pin is 20.1mm long, 11.7mm in diameter at the head, 2.4mm in diameter at the shaft, and weighs 5.6g.
Early Medieval collared pins have been classified by Haldenby (2012) and this example falls under "pins with globular heads" (Haldenby 2012, p.6, fig. 9). This type is more prevalent north of the Humber and appear more common in the Anglo-Scandinavian period becoming the dominant form in the late 9th to 10th century.
Similar pins have also been recovered from 9th - 10th century deposits in excavations at Fishergate, York (Rogers 1993, p.1362, fig.662).
