A cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex decorated spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD); most probably medieval date (AD 1300-1550). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-convex in profile. Both faces have a cast ridge around the internal and external edges. The central hole is broadly circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 6.41mm. The upper and lower faces are decorated with radiating ribs, extending from the hole to the external edge with single raised pellets between each rib; this pattern is majorly dented and therefore the patterns are unclear. The lower face has a similar design although the pellets are arranged on the external edge. The spindle whorl is a white colour with an even but eroded surface patina. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery). This form is often attributed to the Medieval period although this example has a very high bi-convex profile.

The whorl measures 26.66mm in diameter, is 6.97mm thick. It weighs 22.0 grams
