A Post Medieval copper alloy single oval looped composite buckle with integral forked spacer onto which have been soldered separate front and back plates dating to the period cAD 1350 -1450. The buckle has a notched lip and the pin is in place. The pin is formed of copper alloy sheet, triangular in plan with bevelled sides. It steps in in width where it is curved around the bar. The forks are covered by the plate but run the full length of the plates and have a thickening adjacent to the frame which the plates abut.
The front plate has a circular cut out at the attachment end with a groove running a short way into the plate, across the opening. The opening is flanked by separate copper alloy rivets. Horizontally across the front of the plate is an incised pattern of three rows of narrow zigzags (wrigglework) and two diagonal zigzags in the two spaces between the rows. The reverse is plain. The buckle and plates have a shiny green patina. The buckle measures 21.82mm in length, 28.97mm in width and 2.21mm in thickness. The plates measure 40.08mm in length, 20.18mm in width and 4.40mm in thickness. The piece overall weighs 17.64g.
Egan and Pritchard (1991:78-9), fig.48 illustrate several similar examples, which they date to the second half of 14 century AD to early 15th century. The cut out on the front plate is typical and may be a quality control indication (ibid.).
