Lead-alloy spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period (AD1200-1500). The whorl has a conical body that appears to be very crudely decorated with raised lines radiating out from the central perforation to the outer edge of the whorl. The flat edge of the whorl is undecorated. The perforation has an internal diameter of 8.8mm.The surface of the whorl is worn with a powdery white patina.
Diameter: 23.8mm; thickness: 11.3mm; weight: 23.5g
Notes:
Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. Examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500
