A complete ceramic spindle whorl of probable early post-medieval date. The spindle is a flattened globular shape with a central circular hole, c.14mm in diameter. A groove runs around the midpoint of the outer face. It is made from a orange sandy earthenware fabric with angular quartz (<1mm) and red ironstone (<1mm) inclusions. There are traces of a green glaze in places on the surface, but most of this has worn away..
Very similar early post-medieval glazed stoneware spindle whorls imported from the Raeren kilns in Belgium are not uncommon finds, see PAS records: LON-81EDE9, BH-713194, NMS-D909D8. This example in green-glazed earthenware may be a British imitation of these.
