SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: WMID-515863

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper alloy pedestal / pendant seal matrix, of medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1400).

The body of the matrix consists of a pedestal, created from a tapering column. These terminate in an incomplete trefoil knop, with a circular suspension hole in the middle. The suspension loop is complete, and has an internal diameter of 2.7 mm. One horizontal collar separates the suspension loop from the rest of the handle. The handle is flat and is orientated horizontally. The die or seal face is sub circular, with a diameter of 17.1 mm.

The die / seal face is incomplete, with a crudely cut die. The design probably depicts a rabbit facing left. The legend is incomplete, with only a couple of letters visible in the middle of the legend [ ]OV[ ].

The seal matrix is 21.9 mm tall, with a base diameter of 17.1 mm. The handle is 9.7 mm wide and 6.3 mm thick. It weighs 5.5 g.

The seal matrix is dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

Two similar seal matrices have been recorded on the PAS database, although with different images on the die, as LIN-F9C257 and GLO-0F6EDC and are considered to be 13th to 14th Century AD in dating.

Class: pedestal
Inscription: [ ]OV[ ]
