A complete copper alloy early Iron Age three-part La Tene 1Ba brooch. The head has a four coiled spring (one spring is actually the separate head of the pin) with an external chord. The coils are slightly smaller than would be typical on a La Tene 1A brooch, but still larger in size than those typically seen on 1C and 2A brooches. A separate thick copper alloy chord passes through the head, securing a separate copper alloy pin, which is simply coiled around it at one end. The bow is 5.72mm wide and 3.22mm thick, narrowing slightly at either end. It is gently curved in profile and its outer face is decorated with a single longitudinal groove running along the centre. The foot is reverted, positioned parallel to the catch-plate and is not attached to bow. It terminates in a single plain knob with two transverse grooves behind it on the outer face of the foot. One side of the foot expands into a flattened catch-plate with curved outer edge securing the pin.

According to Adams (2013, Table 3.5) Type 1B is the most numerous of all the La Tene forms and 1Ba is its most common sub-type, although their distribution is focused on south-west England and they are less common here in East Anglia (ibid. Map 6.11). Adams (ibid.,107-8) suggests a probable fourth to third century BC date range for the La Tene 1B brooches.

Length: 57.13mm, width of head: 15.08mm, thickness of head: 9.22mm, width of bow: 5.50mm, thickness of bow: 3.40mm, weight: 11.53g

Class: La Tene 1Ba
